Silver is a natural antimicrobial, this means it is effective at inhibiting the growth of bacteria, mould and fungi.  Silver has been used for many centuries for its abilities to aid preservation and is currently used in the healthcare sector in silver coated wound dressings and catheters, to help reduce the risk of infection.

When utilized by modern technology, the natural antimicrobial properties of silver can be used in a number of manners.  It can be incorporated into products at the point of manufacture as an additive, giving a product built-in antimicrobial protection, e.g the surface of the product has the ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria.  Silver can also be used in sprays and detergents, again to reduce bacteria levels.

Silver technology therefore has an important role to play in today’s society, as it can give products protection against a wide range of bacteria, mould and fungi, including:

MRSA

E-coli

Salmonella

Listeria

Legionella

Antimicrobial protected products can therefore be beneficial in any environment where hygiene is a priority to help reduce the risk of cross-contamination, e.g hospitals to assist in the fight against healthcare associated infections, the food and catering industry to help prevent food poisoning, schools to help reduce bacterial infection outbreaks or washrooms and gyms, to assist in keeping them clean and hygienic.
